SPOKANE, Wash. -

For 13 years Chad "Cheddar" Rattray operated his hot dog stand on the corner of Howard and Riverside downtown Spokane.

"He was just a good guy. He was a really nice person." Jerry Willard says.

Chad was hired by the Spokane Transit Authority as a bus driver 7 weeks ago. His first shift as a driver on January 18th after his training would be his last.

On Monday morning Chad went in to the hospital feeling flu like symptoms. A little more than 24 hours later after doctors worked tirelessly to save him, Chad died. He was 37 years old.

"I just feel sadness. I'm hollow. It's almost like I have no feelings, just numb." Chad's dad, Terry Rattray told KHQ's Dylan Wohlenhaus. "I wish I would have spent more time with him."

There was so much more to Chad. His step brother Travis Brown says "He was more than just the hot dog guy downtown."

In fact, Chad had worked so closely to the STA bus plaza, several drivers convinced him to close down shop and become a driver for the city. It's the memory of Chad that his dad Terry and his step brother Travis still hold on to. But it's also the stories they are learning after his death.

"No one person will know the extent of it. He's touched so many people." Chad's step brother says. Chad had just completed his International Studies degree at Eastern Washington University. He had plans to go to Africa to help those in need. But while in Spokane he was known as a friend to the African community.

"He was the kind of friend everyone wishes they had. I didn't think I deserved that." Adwoua Awuah says. She migrated to Spokane from Ghana to go to school Chad hired her at his stand to help put her though school.

Yvonna Fripong is also from Ghana. "He was my first brother, friend and everything. "He would accept you without asking any questions and accept your flaws." Chad helped her also get a drive and helped her learn how to drive after moving to Spokane.

After finishing his degree Chad planned to move back to Africa and help those in need. "That was his goal to move there and start a business to help those people." Chad's dad Terry says. "The whole family, all of us are just so proud of him and the impact he had. He never bragged about it, we just so proud."

    Tuesday, August 14 2018 11:48 AM EDT2018-08-14 15:48:20 GMT

I'm more of a dog person, but if there is a place that is willing to pay me to live on an island in Greece and take care of cats, I'll become a feline fanatic.  Well, there is someone offering such a job right now and they claim it's a real opening.  God's Little People Cat Rescue posted on Facebook that they are looking for someone who can look after 55 cats on a little Greek island paradise called Syros.
