BONNER COUNTY, Idaho -

"God preserved his life that night," says Sheriff Daryl Wheeler with the Bonner County Sheriff's Office.

Tuesday night while traveling on Highway 95, Deputy Alex Hughes made a U-turn and was hit by a semi-truck. He was taken to Kootenai Health where he remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit. Wheeler says the first night in the hospital he and the rest of his deputies learned the extent of Hughes' injuries: a concussion, several broken bones and other internal injuries. Hughes is being kept on a ventilator but doctors expect him to make a full recovery.

Staff at the Bonner County Sheriff's Office say they've been collecting donations for Hughes' family. He has a wife and three children. They've also been dropping off food for Hughes' wife and kids while they stay at the hospital. Wheeler says donations can also be made at any Mountain West Bank, the money will go towards helping the family while Hughes gets ready for a long recovery.

"It's just amazing," says Wheeler. "It's amazing he didn't suffer more drastic injuries than this."
