SPOKANE, Wash. -

What police call a hate crime against a transgender woman in Spokane, has resulted in an outpour of support for her from throughout the area. But one local organization is already reaching out to help kids in the LGBT community.

Odyssey Youth Center works with thousands of LGBT youth. Many of them are transgender, like 33-year-old Jacina Carla Scamahorn, who was assaulted inside a bakery on Friday. She's been involved with the center for years.

Three days a week, director Sevan Bussell opens the door to a safe place for Spokane's transgender youth.

For 22 years Odyssey Youth Group has empowered the LGBT community, and their work begins at this drop-in center, where they focus on acceptance, respectful language, and ensuring an affirming space.

Scamahorn says it's where she turned for acceptance when her parents kicked her out years ago.

"It was extended family, it was belonging," she said. "I was part of something bigger than myself."

After her assault, she's still bruised. But she says she's unbroken because of what she learned at Odyssey.

"I feel like being a woman who can take her skin off and swim in the sea," Scamahorn said. "Being a kid that was too quiet it really helped me find my voice."

As the center continues offering support, the goal is to make Spokane a safe place for people of all communities. That's why the walls of the center mean so much.
