SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - A 34-year-old man was arrested Friday after he tried to rob a woman, failed, and then pulled a fire alarm at the nearby Sunshine Terrace as a distraction.

The incident began around 8 p.m. in the area of the 1000 block of South Raymond in Spokane Valley. A woman reported she was sitting in her car listening to music when a man, identified as Robert M. Currier, opened her car door and told her to get out because the car was his now. The woman tried to shut the door, but was grabbed by the arm and pulled out. After a short struggle, the woman was able to get back in her car and lock the door.

Currier left the woman in her car. When deputies arrived they talked to the woman who said he may have gone into the Sunshine Terrace assisted living facility. Two deputies approached the room they believed Currier was in when a fire alarm went off. Deputies thought this may have been a distraction so they went back downstairs to investigate.

When residents began leaving their rooms, the female victim pointed out Currier and shouted, "That's him right there!"

Deputies immediately took Currier into custody. Currier told police he pulled the alarm because there was a small fire in the building, and denied trying to steal the victim's car. No evidence of a fire was found, and no one was injured during the incident.

Currier was booked into Spokane County Jail for second degree attempted robbery and tampering with a fire alarm.
