SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

A Spokane Valley woman is still in the hospital after she fell three stories through an outdoor staircase.

It happened Sunday at the Alderwood Apartments in Spokane Valley.

Chelsey Goff's family and friends are praying for a miracle as she recovers from what could have been a fatal fall.

"We just heard crumbling and she just dropped. I don't know how she fell or how she got in front of our front door because that's a good five feet the other way," said Samantha Cotter.

Cotter was home when Goff fell through the stairs from the top floor.

"She was laying face down, her legs were on the concrete. I dont know, it looked pretty bad. She kept complaining about her left side for the first few minutes. She couldn't even talk, she was just screaming," said Cotter.

Keri Dorsey says her daughter in law suffered severe injuries including lacerations to her head and left leg.

"We think that she was knocked out when she came down and that's pretty much what saved her from being paralyzed or killed because she couldn't fight to try to save herself," said Dorsey.

Dorsey says this isn't the first time there's been a problem with this staircase.

"My son said they had replaced those stairs twice since they've lived here, and we've heard from others that there were cracks that hadn't been taken care of yet. It could have been anybody," said Dorsey.

The Spokane Department of Building and Planning has been contacted to investigate the incident.

Goff is recovering at the hospital, and she's going through a physical rehabilitation program.
