JULIAETTA, Idaho - The Latah County Sheriff's Office is investigating how a man ended up dead on the side of the road in Juliaetta, Idaho Wednesday afternoon.

The Sheriff's Office said in a press release their dispatch center received a call of an unresponsive man on Fourth Street in Juliaetta around 3:45pm. Once on scene, emergency personnel determined that the man had passed away. The Sheriff's Office identified him as 47-year-old Steven A. Zimmerman of Elk City, Idaho, though they say he had been staying with family in Juliaetta.

Lt. Brannon Jordan said Zimmerman was last seen leaving a local bar on Main Street just after midnight on Wednesday morning, apparently heading to his house about two blocks away. Lt. Jordan said initial information indicates as Zimmerman was crossing an alley he fell and struck his head on a metal sewer drainage gate. The Sheriff's Office believes Zimmerman got up and was able to walk a little bit further before he fell again and landed in a three foot deep drainage ditch. Zimmerman was found by a high school student walking home later that afternoon.

The Sheriff's Office will continue their investigation, but they said the Latah County Coroner is also investigating and has scheduled an autopsy to determine the exact cause of Zimmerman's death.
