Doctors confront mom about Honey Boo Boo's weight

Posted: Updated:
Wednesday afternoon, 9-year-old Alana Thompson - better known as Honey Boo Boo - and her mother, "Mama June" Shannon appeared on a health-related TV talk show and the topic of obesity became the focus of their segment.

During the episode, the hosts, who are both doctors, confronted Mama June about her daughter's eating habits.

On the TLC television show "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," which was canceled back in October, viewers frequently saw the family eating deep-friend foods and desserts. The family often talked about their love for junk food and sugary treats, including Alana's "Go Go Juice," which is part Red Bull, part Mountain Dew.

On Wednesday, doctors told Mama June that based on body mass index charts, her daughters height and weight put her in the obese range. Because the girl has asthma, they say her diet only makes things worse.

But in response, the woman told the doctors her daughter's weight is caused by steroids that were prescribed to her. The doctors disagreed, saying the food was to blame, not the medication.

Later in Wednesday's episode, the show announced it would send a pediatric nutritionist to visit their home and talk about nutrition. The family will also have a personal chef teach them how to cook healthy meals.
