SPOKANE, Wash. -

He's been putting smiles on faces for generations. John Reed, a doorman at the Davenport Hotel, celebrated his 85th birthday March 6.

Reed started working at the Davenport in 1943. The hotel has been through a lot of changes since then, something that hasn't changed is Reed's commitment to being a doorman.

At the ripe age of 13, Reed started working at the hotel.

"Started as a bus boy in the Italian Gardens and Louis Davenport taught me how to set up the table," said Reed. As a doorman, Reed has seen a lot of faces walk through the door, including John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and George H. W. Bush. But regulars say they always look forward to seeing John's face

"When you walk through the door you feel welcome. And he always has a smile on his face. And like I said, it's a treat to come here and he adds to that experience," said guest Alicia Seyhanli.

Reed said after all of these years, the Davenport is his home, and he doesn't plan on retiring anytime soon.

"I enjoy being a doorman here and meeting and greeting people, and I'm proud to be part of the Davenport," said Reed.
