GLENDALE, Ariz. - A man in Arizona has been arrested after trying to smuggle his 2-day-old daughter out of a hospital in a plastic bag.

Glendale Police say Jason Matthew Bristol's daughter was born with traces of morphine, marijuana and meth in her system and was brought to the hospital after being born at home. Knowing the state would likely take their daughter from them, the parents came up with a plan to kidnap the baby prior to that happening.

Bristol was caught on surveillance video walking down the hallway of Banner Thunderbird Medical Center with a shopping bag. Immediately alarms designed to go off when someone does take a baby went off in the maternity ward, while Bristol calmly left the hospital with his daughter inside the plastic bag with a blanket over her face.

Nurses came to investigate the alarm, but found no baby, and didn't know she was in the plastic bag. Bristol then left the hospital and police say he made it all the way home before he was caught.

Court documents say Bristol told police he was a meth addict and knew CPS was going to take away his daughter. Bristol said he thought the plastic bag was just fine to carry a baby, and the blanket was just to keep her warm.

Bristol is being charged with Child Abuse and Drug Possession.
