SPOKANE, Wash. -

A study by the Spokane Regional Health District shows that teens in Spokane are using alcohol less, but marijuana, cigarette and e-cigarette use may be going up.

The SRHD released results from the Healthy Youth Survey Friday taken by nearly 10,000 students in Spokane County in October 2014. The survey is taken every two years by students in grades six, eight, 10 and 12 in almost 1,000 public schools in Washington state. According to SRHD, all responses were voluntary and anonymous.

In Spokane, e-cigarette use increased since the last survey to 26 percent among sophomores. That is twice the state's rate.

Marijuana use increased to 19 percent among high school sophomores.

One in four seniors reported marijuana use in the last 30 days.

Among Spokane sophomores, e-cigarette and marijuana use were nearly double the rate of regular cigarette-use: 12 percent.

Past-month-use of alcohol among sophomores continued to trend down.

Some Spokane teens said they were not surprised by the results.

"I don't know, it's just common around here. It's Spokane," said one 16-year-old in Spokane. "It's part of normal day to day life for everybody in my opinion."

"Just the way the environment's going, and just in our day and age, and the music that we listen to and all that, it kind of supports it," said one 15-year-old in Spokane. "I can see how it's going on, and some people are raised around it, and it's in the family. They have medical patients in their home."
