VIDEO: Vicious bloodthirsty piranhas fight over meat thrown in river

Posted: Updated:
(KHQ.COM)- Piranhas are known for their razor sharp teeth and relentless bite. A new viral video from Brazil shows just how violent they can be when they're hungry. Piranhas travel in large groups and often target prey that are larger than them. A predatory school of piranhas can devour their meal within seconds.

Researchers in a 2012 study published by Scientific Reports say black piranhas, the largest of the modern species, can bite with a maximum force of 72 pounds, which is three times a piranha's body weight.

According to Smithsonianmag.com, there are many stories of piranhas eating people but doing so is not an easy feat. Researchers say it would take about 300 to 500 piranhas, five minutes to eat a 180-pound human.

Different kinds of piranhas eat different things. While the typical piranha diet consists of insects, fish, worms, and other piranhas, there are some that only eat vegetables.

In the viral video above, a Brazilian river seems calm until someone throws meat into the water. That's when the intense feeding frenzy begins.
