VIDEO: Biologists reintroduce bison to the wild in Alaska

Posted: Updated:

(KHQ.COM)-  Biologists in Alaska started reintroducing North America's largest land mammal into its natural habitat for the first time in more than a century.  In 2003, a small herd of Wood Bison from Canada were transported to the Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage.  Now, the center has more than 100 bison.

During the next few days, the animals will be boxed up and flown to the western village of Shageluk, where biologists hope the species will thrive once again.

Mike Miller, the Executive Director of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center says, "this is the greatest contribution to wildlife in America in this century.  Predecessors to these animals were almost extinct at one time."
