SPOKANE, Wash. - Fire investigators are looking into what caused three houses to catch fire early Sunday morning next to I-90 on E. Fifth Avenue.

All three houses were unoccupied, and when crews arrived on scene they were all engulfed in flames. The call was upgraded to a three-alarm fire and more than 40 firefighters responded the scene. The fires were eventually extinguished and now the task is finding out how they started.

The fire appears to have started in several places, and an accelerant-detecting dog was brought on scene. Investigators took a few samples for analysis, but Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer said as of Monday morning, it was too early to say if the fires were the result of arson.

The houses were all unoccupied and in the process of being renovated, though neighbors say they were frequented by homeless people.

No injuries were reported.
