Neighbors find syringes in abandoned lots near proposed North-South Freeway

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -

Drug paraphernalia left for trash. It's a problem that's not new to the vacant lots near the proposed North-South Freeway.

Dede, her mother Susan, and their dog Meatball live between the Sprague and Freya off ramps from Interstate 90. It's near the area where the department of transportation is tearing down houses to make room for highway improvements.

Last week, Dede took her dog for a walk past one of the vacant lots and found a syringe and some other drug related items.

"I was looking down and there it was right on the ground. We both almost stepped right on it," said Dede.

It's a disappointing find for neighbors like Dede who live in the area.

"It's not the most affluent neighborhood, but we don't expect to find something like this," said Dede. "It's one hundred feet from a bus stop where children play, children walk, people walk their dogs, ride their bikes. It's just sad that we're in an area that we have to watch for that."

Officials with the Department of Transportation say if you find syringes or other drug paraphernalia in vacant lots along I-90 between Hamilton and Sprague, call them at 509-324-6000.

And right now they are more active than ever, because it's mating season. KHQ met a couple who noticed the blue ash aphids right when they started their walk in the park.
