ATLANTA - A teenager from Georgia who got a second chance at life was killed Wednesday night after trying to rob an elderly woman.

A source close to the family confirms the 17-year-old killed in a high speed police chase was the recipient of a heart transplant in 2013. Anthony Stokes made national headlines when Children's Healthcare of Atlanta originally refused to put him on the transplant list "due to having a history of non-compliance."

After a public push from his family, Stokes was added to the list, and went through a successful heart surgery in August 2013.

Police say Stokes broke into a house thinking no one was at home, but there was an 80-year-old woman inside. The woman's son thinks the suspect was surprised to find his mother home after he kicked in the door.

"He kicked in the door shot at my mother, my mother ran into the bedroom, called 911 and he tore out of here," Danny Thomas told local media.

Later, an officer on patrol saw a black car matching the description, tried to pull the car over, but instead it took off. Minutes later the chase ended with Stokes losing control at an intersection.

Stokes hit another vehicle stopped at a red light, then a female pedestrian who was waiting to cross the road. The car slammed sideways into a metal bank sign and rescuers had to cut away the roof of the car to get Stokes out.

Both Stokes and the female pedestrian were taken to the hospital where Stokes later died.
