55-year-old Shawn Dowd broke his ankle after being hit by a distracted driver. 55-year-old Shawn Dowd broke his ankle after being hit by a distracted driver.

Shawn Dowd wants to raise awareness about distracted driving after he and his girlfriend were struck by a teen texting behind the wheel last month.

“We're all guilty of it,” Dowd said. “But we really have to make a conscious effort to pull over. Don't text and drive.”

On March 8, Dowd says, he and his girlfriend pulled up to a stop sign on his motorcycle after a long day riding. He says an SUV, driven by a teenage girl, was driving at them from the right, and when she went to turn left, she cut the corner and struck them.

“All I ever saw was the top of her head,” Dowd said. “At the last minute I yelled ‘jump.'”

The SUV struck his motorcycle. His girlfriend broke her wrist. The 55-year-old broke his ankle.

“It could have been so much worse,” Dowd said.

Now he's running Thrifty Car Sales from his crutches as he heals. But he's just happy to be alive.

“8 inches, 12 inches the other way, I'm sure I wouldn't be here telling you this story right now,” he said.

But he still wants to send a message.

“Please,” Dowd said.

“I'm almost begging you not to pick up that phone and text.”

Truck spills steel balls down West Seattle road, cars hit as they bounce by

    Wednesday, October 17 2018 10:59 PM EDT2018-10-18 02:59:07 GMT

SEATTLE - It was a weird day for some drivers in West Seattle after a load of softball-sized steel balls spilled from the back of a truck. Footage shows the balls rolling and bouncing down the road after breaking out of a bag in the back of the truck. Several cars were hit before the balls pooled as the street leveled out. KING 5 reports it’s unclear how much damage the balls may have caused or how they got loose in the first place.
