VIDEO: Oregon bracing for disruptive drought conditions

Posted: Updated:

PORTLAND, Oregon- Oregon is in disaster mode as it braces for extreme drought conditions this year. The snowpack drought will impact everything from migrating fish to wildfires.

The unusually warm winter left hardly any snow to refresh Oregon's streams and rivers and biologists are concerned that migrating fish will be one of the first to pay the price. Oregon State Biologist Tom Murtagh says will have 'stress effects on these fish. You will see a higher mortality of what we call pre-spawn mortality which is inflicted on fish before they get a chance to spawn.'

Pre-spawn mortality could impact fish populations for years to come.

Bill Schneider is a Science Operations Officer at the National Weather Service and he says lower river levels may also impact shipping at the Port of Portland.

Along with drought, Oregon may be in store for a terrible wildfire season. Schneider says much of Oregon's terrain will be 'uncovered and drying out probably alot more rapidly than normal'.

Unlike California, Oregon's drinking water is in pretty good shape. The only people who may see water issues during the summer months are those with shallow wells.
