BBB wants DirecTV to pull Rob Lowe ad campaign

Posted: Updated:
KHQ.COM - - After Comcast complained about DirecTV's ad campaign featuring Rob Lowe, the Better Business Bureau is now recommending DirecTV discontinue the ads all together.

You've probably seen the commercials - "Hi, I'm Rob Lowe, and I have DirecTV." Then, different awkward versions of Rob Lowe introduce themselves, and say they have cable. Those other versions include "Scrawny Arms Rob Lowe," "Super Creepy Rob Lowe" and "Meathead Rob Lowe" just to name a few.

In the ads, DirecTV claims it's service gets reliable signal 99% of the time, up to 1080p HD programming, more sports programming, better customer service, and better image and audio quality than cable.

At the end of each ad, the DirecTV Rob Lowe -- referring to the awkward version of himself -- says, "Don't be like this me. Get rid of cable and upgrade to DirecTV."

Comcast said the ads were unfair, and in most cases, the Better Business Bureau National Advertising Division review board agreed, saying the satellite TV company couldn't substantiate many of the claims.

The BBB says the commercials "conveyed a comparative and unsupported superiority message" and is now urging DirecTV to change the ads, or stop airing them.DirecTV is appealing the claim that the ads are deceptive.
