CHENEY, Wash. -

The homes on Scriber Road near Cheney had a front seat view to the Fish Lake fire.

"It looked like it was 3/4 of a mile to the south of us," said Jeff Omlin, who lived nearby. "When the helicopters were scooping, they were going right over the top of our house."

Because they live in such a rural area, Jeff and his family are careful to protect their home as best as they can.

"We extended gravel, and cleaned out underbrush under trees," said Jeff. "We have sprinklers going to keep everything as wet as possible."

But this was the first time they came close to leaving their house.

"We packed up stuff to keep the kids comfy if we did lose our house," said Jeff. "When we were actually packing up filing cabinets from our truck, I was getting a little nervous."

And, after a long evening, now they're even more prepared for what could be a long summer.

"We enjoy being out here, we know it's remote and that's a chance we are taking."
