SPOKANE, Wash. -

The spokesman for Pacific Steel and Recycling has confirmed that one of the workers hospitalized after the release of chlorine gas last week has died.

Mike Tracy said the man, who was identified by the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office Monday afternoon as 44-year-old Edward K. Dumaw, died Saturday night after days in critical condition following exposure to the gas. Tracy said the other workers who were hospitalized in critical condition have all been released.

Gas leaked into air at Pacific Steel and Recycling was chlorine

“Words cannot express the sorrow I feel for the loss of one of our own. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and I ask that everyone in the community and the Pacific family send their prayers to those that grieve for their loved one,” Pacific Steel CEP Jeff Millhollin said in a statement released Sunday night.

The gas leaked from a 1-ton cylinder that workers were in the process of crushing for scrap metal on Wednesday. A cloud of yellow gas was released during the crushing, sickening many people and prompting evacuations near the plant. It is still unclear where the canister came from, but the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries is leading the investigation.
