One North Central Spokane neighborhood fed up with crime

Posted: Updated:
A neighborhood is getting fed up with the crime. A neighborhood is getting fed up with the crime.

A neighborhood is getting fed up with the crime. A mom says she doesn’t even let her kids walk around the block on their own because of the issues in the North Central Spokane neighborhood near Cannon Playground.

Angela Hollowell says she's known as the enforcer in her neighborhood. She's frustrated that people are breaking the law and getting away with it and she wants to see more police response.

“I feel like we are completely ignored when it comes to the crime,” she says.

She says there has been public intoxication, drugs, and attacks. She says she and her neighbors feel like prisoners in their own homes.

“I keep it locked at all times for a reason because I’ve had people literally trying to walk into my house,” Hollowell says.

Most recently, she says a group of teens have been harassing the neighborhood. Right now, they’re not facing criminal charges but she says they flashed a gun at her 10-year-old son. She wants to keep her kids safe.

“Like my life is in danger and I seriously sit here feeling like an idiot that I don't have a weapons permit,” she says.

But she's getting tired.

“This area is known as felony flats. We have an excessively high crime rate. There is no reason to why there are no units in the area,” she says.

Spokane Police says that the North Central neighborhood conditions officer is well aware of the issue and working to resolve it. They say they do understand the frustrations but in some cases, it takes time to do the investigation. In the meantime, if someone has any information to help, they should call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
