Kindergartners grow trees for those hit by wildfires

SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane kindergarten class is growing dozens of small trees they’ll eventually send to Chelan, which was hit hard by wildfires this summer.

The kindergartners at Hamblen Elementary are studying trees right now.

“You have to make it as concrete as possible,” Wendy Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald teaches at Hamblen, and had the idea for the trees. She says her friend was clearing her yard when she came across the saplings. Rather than see them disposed of, Fitzgerald offered to take them off her hands.

Now they’re sitting on the windowsill at Hamblen Elementary, and once they’ve grown, they’ll be sent to a school in Chelan, who has offered to replant them.

And hopefully they’ll make a small difference. Wildfires the past two summers have destroyed millions of trees in Central Washington, leaving the region’s ecosystem vulnerable.

“It’s exciting that even though they’re 5 or 6 years old that they can still make a difference,” Fitzgerald said. “And we need good things happening in our classroom and good things happening in our world. Because we all need good neighbors.”
