What did 'Back to the Future' get right?

Posted: Updated:

Watching "Back to the Future" nearly 26 years later, while there are some misfires, it's impressive to note home many tech trends the movie was actually able to predict.

Thumb Print Technology: YES
While we don't pay for taxis with our thumb print today, like in the movie, we do use fingerprint technology to unlock our phones and we are able to pay electronically for taxi services like Uber and Lyft.

Flat screen TVs and video conferencing :YES
When you think about the bulky, boxy televisions of the 80's, it's incredible the movie managed to predict the sleek, thin televisions we have today, some that even allow for video conferencing.

Smart Glasses: YES
Marty McFly's smart goggles he wears in the movie have a similar function to today's Google Glass, Oculus Rift and Samsung VR.

News Drones: YES
Drones are starting to take over the market and news agencies are starting research how the drones could benefit the business.

Food waste used as a fuel source: YES
Toyota just released a video today to explain how their cars benefit from the food waste as fuel: http://www.toyota.com/FBE

Hover boards: No
While Lexus did manage to create a hover board, the technology is still not quite there. The boards are not available for the public to buy and it depends on magnetic tracks hidden under the floor the the hover board skate park to work.

Flying Cars: No
We also don't have flying cars on the ground or in the air... but they may be a reality in the next couple years. There have been several companies that have ventured to craft cars capable of taking flight like the Aeromobile 3.0 and the U.S.-based Terrafugia. The Terrafugia has retractable wings and will reportedly go on sale in 2017 for a cool $279,000.

Self-lacing Shoes: No
We don't have self-lacing shoes, but Nike has announce they are trying to create "PowerLaces." Originally Nike announced they would release the self-tying shoes today, October 21, 2015 but there have not been a lot of updates sine then.
