RATHDRUM, Idaho -

Officials with BNSF Railway say they are delaying constructing a second set of train tracks through northern Idaho.

The Coeur d'Alene Press reports that BSNF is still asking the city of Rathdrum to prepare for the project, even though construction has been pushed back at least two years.

BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas says that up to 55 trains pass through Rathdrum each day. The pending project would relieve congestion and bottlenecks.  Last year, the railway company added nearly 20 miles of additional track last year between Spokane and Pasco.

Rathdrum Public Works Director Kevin Jump says that the project's timeline has changed several times since it was first proposed in 2014.
