SPOKANE, Wash. -

It's that time of year again to find out who is the best bagger in Washington state. Competitors from all over the state duked it out Tuesday at the Red Lion Hotel. Last year's best bagger, David Tochinskiy was from Spokane.  He works at the Rosauers in Five Mile and this year that very same store had a company wide champion who competed in the state bagging competition.

With only six months of experience, Luke Netjes is quite the impressive bagger.

"You need good technique, good speed, and a good eye for groceries," says Netjes.

Luke seems to have it.  He has worked at Rosauers only since April, but first won the store bagging competition. Then he won the company-wide competition a few weeks ago.

On Tuesday he competed for the state title against nine other competitors.

"It takes hours, and hours and hours of practice," says Netjes.

To win this bagging competition it's about much more than speed.  You have to take into account placement of the groceries and weight distribution within the bag to be the best bagger in the state.

Luke has had the benefit of training with the best.

"David Tochinskiy works in this store and he's the one who won Nationals last year," says Netjes.   "I've been practicing with him and picking his brain a little bit to learn some of those techniques."

So as this year's best in the company, Luke has a little advice for aspiring baggers.  "Stay calm and just bag."

Unfortunately Luke came up just short of moving on in the competition. Candice Lastimado from Metropolitan Markets in Seattle was the winner Tuesday night.
