BOISE, Idaho -

The family of an Idaho rancher shot and killed by sheriff's deputies after one of his bulls was hit by a car and charged emergency crews says his death wasn't justified.

State police say Jack Yantis, 62, died a week ago after an altercation with two Adams County deputies. They were planning to shoot the animal when Yantis arrived with a rifle. Investigators say all of them fired their weapons.

Family members tell The Idaho Statesman that deputies escalated the situation and needlessly killed a man.

Yantis' family says a deputy pushed Yantis while his finger was on the trigger to shoot the bull. Relatives think the gun might have gone off and then the deputies opened fire. The family says Yantis was shot in the chest and abdomen.

Sheriff Ryan Zollman didn't return request for comment.
