Even if you are able to get your family into a warm hotel room during the windstorm blackout, four legged friends are not always welcome.

The Red Cross has a "co-shelter" open, where volunteers are doing something quite unprecedented in wake of these dire conditions. The Pets Act came into play post-Hurricane Katrina to help the Red Cross house people and their pets. This comes after victims ran from those dangerous conditions during the hurricane, often times leaving cats and dogs behind. Some, for good.

"She was shivering, literally shivering and I had to wrap a towel or blanket around her in the truck until it warmed up," said Kari Trudel whose finding temporary warmth inside the shelter off Ash with her three children. "It has impacted both the two and four legged members of this community," explained Dave Richardson, with the Spokane Humane Society.

Humane society, Red Cross, Scraps and Heart volunteers are doing what they can, even if that means all they have to work with is a closet. "Paws, ears, nose, it is just like us," said Richardson, in reference to the commonalities between humans and animals.

"It is a very small area, I mean my boxer is back in the back room just because she is a nervous wreck right now," Trudel told KHQ Local News. Although Trudel is lucky enough to find a hotel room for her kids, her 10-year-old boxer will not be able to stay with them tonight. "Hopefully the power will be on soon, she really does not want to eat or drink because she is scared."

This Red Cross co-shelter is one of the first of its kind, however you must be using the shelter yourself to bring your pet along. Scraps is completely full and barely has power, the Spokane Humane Society has board some pets, but really does not have much room either.

If you are forced to stay in your home with no power and have your pets with you, veterinarians say there is a couple of things you can do for their safety. Make sure they have good access to food and water. Bedding is very important, especially types that do not soak up moisture. If it is too cold for you to be outside, it is likely too cold for your pet.

LOS ANGELES - In less than two weeks, you can watch The Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis. Usually, ahead of the air date of these things, we'll get little teasers and snippets of what happened, but this one is a bombshell.  For years, the debate on whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie has raged on. If you ask me, I'm going to tell you that it's not only a Christmas movie, but the best Christmas movie ever.
