Giving Tuesday: Encouraging you to give back

Posted: Updated:

You are most likely wrapping up a busy holiday weekend of shopping and trying to find the best deals and the perfect gifts for all the loved ones in your life, but today, Giving Tuesday is about making a difference and giving back to those who need it most.

Giving Tuesday began in New York in 2012 with the purpose of encouraging people everywhere to give whatever they can to a charitable organization or volunteer.

While the easiest way to give is just to make a donation to the charity of your choice, there are also many ways you can give without giving cash.

If you do have cash to give, Red Lion Hotels are offering an incentive. Anyone who donates at least $100 to Blessings Under The Bridge through Project Wake Up Call, will receive a complimentary one-night-stay at the future Red Lion at the Park in Spokane.

If you don't have cash, consider calling a charity you like to support and ask if there are any gifts-in-kind they need. For example, the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery in Spokane is currently in need of infant formula, diapers and winter clothing for children (especially in sizes 6, 7 and 8).  Another example would be Project Beauty Share, a non-profit organization that collects new and gently used hygiene, beauty and cosmetic products to give to women in our community who are trying to get back on their feet.

There are also many organizations and locations right now who are also collecting winter clothing for the homeless in our community of those who can't afford it.

These are just a few ways you can give back to local charities. Let us know about other non-profit organizations you think people should consider giving to on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/KHQLocalNews/photos/a.106005216097677.9114.105924042772461/1085501611481361/?type=3&theater

If you don't have gifts in kind to donate, you can also give back on #GivingTuesday by donating blood. You can sign up for an appointment with Inland Northwest Blood Center here: http://inbcsaves.org/schedule-an-appointment

There are also hundreds of ways to volunteer in our community. SpokaneCares.org is the best website to go to to find all the different volunteer opportunities. Under the volunteer tab, just pick one of the volunteer topics that interest you and you will be directed to volunteer opportunities currently open.

Last year, #GivingTuesday raised an estimated $45 million, with more than 15,000 non-profit organizations getting involved around the U.S., according the Case Foundation. This year, more than 30,000 organizations have signed up. It's also gotten some very high-profile supporters.
