Business owner fed up with repeated thefts

SPOKANE, Wash. -

After months of the same thief trespassing and causing thousands of dollars in damages, business owner Jesse Chaney, of Chaney's Automotive, is at his wit's end.

Chaney says he's filed multiple police reports and has several surveillance photos and videos of this guy breaking into cars and walking around on his property.  The problem is the thief still hasn't been caught.

He's even hit the lot two times in just the past week.

"It's that bad," says Chaney.  He has watched the thief for months now on his security footage, trespass on his property and ransack customer cars.

"They're on a mission for something.  Money, change."

The intruder forces his way through a side fence door and heads down a walkway next to the building, where he comes through a cut hole in the fence.  He then has access to the courtyard but is also at a prime spot to be on the security camera footage.

"It catches all the action cause it always starts here," says Chaney gesturing to the lot.

On the security footage you can see the guy walk around the lot, opening cars that are left unlocked and searching them with a flashlight.  If the car is locked he finds another way in.

"He couldn't get in damaging the door," says Chaney of one car, "so then he decides to just break the window."

Usually the thief only only takes change or small items but it ends up costing Chaney a fortune in damages.

"One night he did about six to eight thousand dollars in damage," says Chaney.

Since the break ins happen so often Jesse has had to pay out of pocket for much of the damage done to the cars.  He says at this point he has probably spent about $3500 of his own money to fix the vehicles.

"I'm pretty upset because I'm trying to make a living," says Chaney.  "I've got four kids."

He's worried now that he will start to lose customers over this.  "It's just this one guy!  This one guy is demolishing our cars around here and he just gets away with it."

Chaney says he's so frustrated at this point since police can't do anything unless the guy is caught breaking in or the police have the name of the offender.

Fire lined vs. fire containment: What's the difference?

    Wednesday, July 18 2018 1:48 PM EDT2018-07-18 17:48:19 GMT

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. - We've had a lot of questions about what firefighters  are talking about when they say that the fire is 100 percent lined, but that the Upriver-Beacon fire is 0% contained. Here's the gist, according to firefighters: Containment is essentially their faith in the strength of the fire line. So when they say there is a line around 100 percent of the fire, but 0 percent containment, it means they are concerned that the fire could jump the line.
