SPOKANE, Wash. -

You're going to have to wait until the end of next month to ride the horses in Riverfront Park.

The Looff Carrousel closed on Thursday for its annual maintenance. Projects for the Carrousel include painting, installing horses, restoring existing horses and leveling the carrousel deck.

The Looff Carrousel was created by Charles Looff as a wedding gift for his daughter, Emma. It began operation in the summer of 1909 in Natatorium Park on the banks of the Spokane River. Natatorium Park closed in 1967 and the Carrousel was put into storage. It remained in storage until 1975 when it made its debut at its current location in Riverfront Park. In total, there are 54 horses, 1 giraffe, 1 tiger, and 2 chariot benches on the historic piece, all of which are original.

Riverfront park says more than 300,000 people ride the Carrousel every year.

After the yearly maintenance is completed, the ride will reopen on February 26.
