One person dead after shooting at The Palomino

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

One person is dead after a fatal shooting Sunday night at The Palomino event center located at Lyons and Lidgerwood in north Spokane. Spokane Police tell us that an argument started either inside or outside the venue and once outside, the argument escalated into shots fired. The suspect/suspects fled the scene in a vehicle after the shooting.

Police have not confirmed how many shots were fired but a woman who lives in an apartment one block away told KHQ reporter Cynthia Johnson that she heard 10 gun shots and that she's concerned not just for her safety but the safety of her 1-year-old daughter as well.

Lidgerwood between Francis and Lyons was blocked off for a few hours while police and the forensics teams finished up the investigation. Police are currently combing through surveillance video and talking to witnesses in hopes of gathering information on a possible suspect.

The Palomino not a nightclub as we originally reported, it's actually an event center. It is not always open to those 18 and over either. The daughter of the couple who owns the venue told us, "the age restriction depends on the event and what promoter has rented the facility for each event. [Sunday] night, the venue was rented out by a promoter who has done many events in the past without incident. The altercation did not start in the venue, there were no weapons in the venue, and it happened after the venue was closed and everybody was leaving. The security team was outside to diffuse the situation to the best of their ability, and they did everything they could to get innocent bystanders back inside to safety."

According to the venue's Facebook page, Sunday night, a group called T.A.S.T.Y., known to throw parties for Spokane's nightlife culture, was hosting an "All Black Everything" party and 168 people confirmed they would be attending.

A witness who has asked to remain anonymous posted an emotional account of the horrific crime saying, "I watched a man breathe his last breath tonight. People who shoot people don't accomplish anything. The shooter won't be remembered but the victim will be. You don't get drunk and let emotions affect you enough to carry a gun around and then shoot an innocent person because you're acting a f****** fool. Arguments over some chick turned to murder? That's a tough story to tell the family. Rest in peace to the man who lost his life and never saw it coming. People, please don't ever do this s***. You wanna fight someone, fine. But NOTHING is worth taking another man's life. Especially an innocent man who crosses the street and has done nothing to deserve what has happened to him. I literally watched this innocent man take his bits of life. All the other witnesses and I have to live with that everyday now. Be safe people. And live happy and treat people right. You never know what day might be your last. You're in this earth to make a difference in people's lived in a positive manner. Don't let yourself or your family down by making foolish mistakes."

On Monday, The Palomino has issued the following statement about the shooting:

Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young man who lost his life next door to our venue after we closed early this morning. We are devastated by this tragedy. The Palomino was rented out last night by an independent promoter who has been putting on incident-free events for years. Thank you to all of our supporters, friends, and family for your kind words and thoughts.
