Just before 4 p.m. Monday a train went off the rails in Okanogan County just north of Riverside.

Okanogan County Emergency Management officials report the train was traveling south at about 9 mph when the engineer felt a tug behind him and stopped the train to find that five cars had detached and derailed.  There were 52 cars in total, and two locomotives.

The train was carrying calcium carbonate, a non-hazardous rock. Some of the rocks spilled, but there is no environmental threat.

Emergency Management says it appears the ground liquified under the tracks in that spot and gave way as the train was traveling through. This liquification is a problem they're dealing with in a couple of other spots in the area.

No one was hurt in the derailment. The track in the area could be out of service for about two weeks.
