Hot Clicks: Man on EgyptAir flight takes selfie with hijacker

Posted: Updated:

The world is all asking the same question this morning - "What the heck were you thinking?!" - after a man on board the EgyptAir flight that was hijacked decided to request a selfie with the hijacker himself.

A 26-year-old man from Scotland, Ben Innes, was on board the EgyptAir flight when it was hijacked and diverted to Cyprus. Innes was one of the few passengers held hostage on board with the flight crew after the plane landed and for some reason, he decided to take a selfie with the hijacker, who has been identified as Egyptian man, Seif El Din Mustafa.

Innes didn't actually take the photo, a flight attendant did, but he told The Sun newspaper that while sitting in his seat, he got up, "threw caution to the wind" and requested a photo with the hijacker. Innes had to have a flight attendant translate for him but he said the hijacker shrugged when asked about the photo, as if to say "okay."

The photo shows Innes standing next to the hijacker with what looks like an exposed suicide belt and it went viral within hours of being posted on social media. The vest turned out to be fake and all the plane's passengers and crew were released unharmed. The hijacker has been arrested.

When asked why he decided to take the photo, Innes told the newspaper that he thought, "Why not? If he blows us all up, it won't matter anyway."

He went on to say that when he was thinking about taking the photo, he thought to himself, "it would be the best selfie you could ever send to your mates - better than anything you'd ever get on a night out or a holiday."

On the more practical side of this decision making skills, Innes said the photo allowed him to get a better look at the device Mustafa was wearing around his waist and when he examined it more closely, he thought it looked fake.

NOT in a microwave. For this reason a new prank-challenge going around on Facebook is resulting in some hilarious text conversations between mothers and their grown children.
