KOLKATA, India (AP) - Rescuers have been digging through large chunks of debris from a massive overpass that collapsed across an intersection in the Indian city of Kolkata today, killing at least 17 people and injuring scores of others. Up to 150 people are thought to be missing.

A section of the overpass, which was under construction in a busy residential and shopping area, fell on vehicles and people moving underneath, trapping people in cars, trucks and motorized rickshaws.

One witness tells a TV station in New Delhi (NDTV) that there was "a loud rumble" and then "a lot of dust in the sky."

Army troops and personnel from the National Disaster Response Force joined efforts to extract people from vehicles under massive concrete blocks and metal debris. Huge cranes and other rescue equipment reached the site and began clearing the rubble.

The top elected official in West Bengal state visited the collapse site and said a private builder had missed several deadlines for completing the overpass.
