TACOMA, Wash. -

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee has signed a bill that aims to help a rising number of homeless students in the state.

Inslee signed House Bill 1682 at McCarver Elementary School on Friday. The measure will create grant programs to provide homeless students with emergency shelter, rental assistance, transportation help and case management. It will also staff more schools with homeless liaisons.

In 2015, Washington had about 35,500 homeless students compared to around 32,500 the year before and 20,780 in 2009, according to the state Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The bill was given $2 million in the supplemental budget passed by the Legislature on Tuesday, and will supplement the $950,000 in grant money the state receives from the federal McKinney-Vento Education of Homeless Children and Youth Assistance Act each year.

NOT in a microwave. For this reason a new prank-challenge going around on Facebook is resulting in some hilarious text conversations between mothers and their grown children.
