COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho -

Patty Duke is known for her roles in many great stories, but perhaps the greatest of all is a love story. She and her husband Michael Pearce, were married for more than 30 years.

"We were best friends, lovers, and confidants," Pearce said. "We shared deep, passionate secrets. Those are mine forever. She'd start a sentence, and I'd finish it. I always said it was my job in life to make her laugh."

They shared everything; their children, ups and downs, her struggle with mental health.

"She was one of the first celebrities to speak out and say 'I'm bi polar, and here I am world,'" Pearce remembers. "People loved her for speaking out."

He says it wasn't as easy as people thought for her to share that part of her life, but she felt it was her duty. He says they get thousands of letters from people thanking her for being so open.

"It was hard, she did not take it lightly," Pearce said, speaking about the many talks his wife gave on mental health. "She felt their story, she felt their pain, because she had lived it."

The couple also shared a small, Coeur d'Alene home. Like his wife, Pearce says he loves that it's not pretentious. In fact, the couple is so down to earth, while Pearce showed us around his house, he points out her Oscar; casually propped next to cookbooks and home improvement books in his kitchen.

"She wanted it out. She was proud. But the focal point of her life was her children and grandchildren," Pearce said.

Now, Pearce is planning his wife's memorial service. He says he wants it to public, so the fans she loved so much can be there to say bye one last time.

"Everyone's been so fabulous in wanting to help, and because she loved the public so much, and they loved her, we decided to make it open to the public," Pearce said, adding, "It's open. The way she was, like a book. I think that's the best way to honor my wife."

The memorial service will be held on April 16th, at 11am, at Lake City Church. That address is 6000 Ramsey Rd, Coeur d'Alene Idaho
