SPOKANE, Wash. -

When a Garry Middle School 8th grader was nominated to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York, she didn’t think she’d be selected. But when she was, her principal, teacher, and classmates all made sure she’d find out in a fun way.

Victoria Jurgens is the lead violinist in her sixth period orchestra class. Two weeks ago, Victoria was in class when her principal walked in and asked her if she knew how much trouble she was in.

Victoria was confused and asked “How much trouble?” The principal’s answer brought Victoria to tears.

“Well that depends on whether or not you can come up with the money to go to go to New York to join a performance.”

Victoria was nominated to play at the Middle School Performance Series at Carnegie Hall two weeks ago. When she was selected, her mother thought it would be fun to surprise her.

"I freaked out,” said Victoria. “I started to cry and I was so happy that it actually happened."

Victoria was chosen as one of 400 students from the U.S. and Canada to perform in New York. She is the only student from Garry Middle School to ever be selected.

“She’s earned it,” said her teacher, Chris Ehrlich. “She’s a leader in the class, she has a 4.0 and plays three sports.”

“I just can't believe I actually made it,” said Victoria. “I never thought I'd be sitting here today going to New York."

But even if she weren’t, Victoria says that music has already done something for her that means so much more.

"If I'm having a bad day then I take out my aggression and my sadness in my playing,” she said. “If I need something to cheer me up then I can play and put all my emotion into music and play better."

Victoria’s trip is June 22 to June 26. She will have three full days of performances and touring New York.

The trip will cost Victoria and her mother $6,000. Ehrlich has set up a GoFundMe account to help send both of them.
