SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Vancouver firefighter is being remembered after he died from his injuries after being hit by a car while walking near his home.

Andrew Miller was 27 years old and grew up in Spokane.

“He was a good role model. He was fun to be around. We fought like siblings. As siblings do. Everybody loved to be around him,” says Trevor Miller, Andrew Miller’s younger brother.

Trevor remembers hearing about what happened early Friday morning.

“A marked fire rescue SUV came up so I came out to see what was going on and stepped out and they informed me he had been killed. At 2 in the morning it's kind of a shock,” he says.

The family is still raw from the news.

“We're getting through it now but it's rough when you first find out,” Trevor says.

They say Andrew accomplished a lot when he was younger. He was a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, and a hard worker. Trevor says as soon as his brother set his sights on being a firefighter, he did whatever it took.

“He was working 2 to 3 jobs at a time to put himself through school to be a firefighter.”

He was a volunteer firefighter with Spokane County Fire District 10, and then got the job in Vancouver, WA.

Now, seeing the support from friends and fire districts, “we always knew he was loved but when you see everybody showing up that as much as we loved him everybody loved him too,” says Trevor.

It’s something the family appreciates and they hope his brother’s legacy lives on.

“Work hard and go for what you're going for and get it. Don't let anything get in your way. He never did,” he says.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Vancouver Firefighter’s Community Assistance Fund, 2807 Northwest Fruit Valley Road in Vancouver.

KHQ.COM - Most mothers can only hope by the time their children grow up and move out of the house, they've learned all the necessary things to be a successful adult, including the basic knowledge that a turkey must be cooked in an oven, or perhaps in a smoker... NOT in a microwave. For this reason a new prank-challenge going around on Facebook is resulting in some hilarious text conversations between mothers and their grown children.
