Nurse helps rescue driver who fell 300 feet down embankment near Spokane River

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

On Monday a 27-year-old Parks and Recreation employee drove his truck over an embankment near Northwest Boulevard and Providence. The driver fell more than 300 feet before he was ejected from the truck and thrown into the Spokane River. Investigators are still looking into what caused that crash, but the driver's condition has improved Tuesday.

KHQ met with one of the quick-acting bystanders who helped save his life following the harrowing crash.

For Andrea Schlesser Dury, Monday is a day she'll never forget. The oncology nurse was heading home, driving along Northwest Boulevard, when a white truck suddenly swerved in front of her.

She immediately got out of her car and climbed down the steep hill along with two men who had also seen what happened.

"I was hoping for the best, but worried about the worst," she said.

The three found the truck empty and discovered the man unconscious laying in the Spokane River. They managed to pull him to shore and stayed with him until paramedics arrived. Detectives say the actions by Andrea and the two other strangers saved that driver's life.

"I just told him to keep calm and to breathe."

Andrea says she's praying for the man and his family, amazed he was able to survive such a fall.

"Somebody's watching over him," she said.

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's been nearly one week since Washington voters passed Initiative 1639, a sweeping package of stricter gun regulations - particularly for semiautomatic rifles. While the measure raises the minimum age to purchase semiautomatic rifles to 21, creates enhanced background checks, and forces customers to wait 10 days before taking possession of the firearm, I-1639 lays the framework for "safe storage" of semiautomatic rifles

SPOKANE, Wash. - It was one horrible crime, but two very different beliefs of how it went down. Police suspect the victim, 13-year-old Russell Evans, was run over by a hit and run driver. His body was found in the middle of the road. Some believe it was an accident and the driver fled the scene. Others say this was something much more sinister. "He was just a kid, he didn't deserve to die in the street," said Russell's cousin Chris Rosenau.
