CHENEY, Wash. -

Students at Eastern Washington University did not learn about last week's threat on campus until after the issue was resolved.

On Tuesday, Shyiar Moore, 19, was arrested after she posted a video on Snapchat of her holding a gun and making the statement, “In the dorms, with guns, shooting everyone up, Glock 12.”

EWU Police told KHQ that the threat was not immediate because investigating officers quickly learned the gun was taken off campus.

“There is a risk every time you do it, but we always mitigate that risk with what's best for campus,” said Deputy Chief, Gary Gasseling. “We felt the best thing to do was wait, get the information and confront the individual.”

Gasseling says the university will use the campus-wide alert system, which sends texts and e-mails to students, if there is a viable threat.

Gasseling says once investigators knew the dorm and campus were safe, they shifted their focus to locating the gun, and using the alert system could have got in the way of the search.

“We didn't want to take the chance on losing the information we had,” said Gasseling. “As soon as you put something out everyone else in the world has it.”

KHQ spoke with students on campus, who had mixed reactions about not receiving the alert.

“I think I should have been notified,” said Fidel Ortega, a student at EWU. “Even if we don't know if it's loaded, it's still a gun on campus.”

“I think that if an alert was sent out it would have caused a lot of panic on campus,” said Desirae Lopes.

“I feel like if it was investigated and [police] found something that made us want to freak out and felt the need to make our community more aware they would have said something,” said Justin Schneider.

According to the university, guns are not allowed on campus.
