Spokane dog shot in the face gets emergency surgery

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane is dog recovering after being shot in the face. Not only was he shot, but when his owners were tracked down via the dog's microchip, they said they don't want him back.

SCRAPS is investigating the shooting. They don't have any leads. The gunshot led to a defect in the dog's mouth. He needed specialized surgery. One of the region's top doctors volunteered to help -- for free.

"He's a really sweet dog," said Alex Hamilton with the Valley Vet Clinic. "He's been really sweet the whole time."

Even after that unspeakable cruelty. The bullet went through the 2-year-old dog's nose and out his jaw.

A good Samaritan saw the dog struggling to survive and took him to the vet. SCRAPS then transported him to the Valley Vet Clinic on Sprague. The owners performed emergency surgery, saving his life.

He needed stitches on his tongue. His palate had extensive damage. That repair was beyond their expertise.

"We called to get the help from a human oral surgeon," said Hamilton.

Dr. Mark Paxton jumped at the opportunity to help. He's performed hundreds of cleft palate surgeries. But never on a dog.

"I knew it was just going to be different," said Dr. Paxton.

The operation took about 45 minutes and was a success. It will allow the pup to eat and drink normally again, and unburden him from chronic infections.

"It went perfect," Dr. Paxton said.

Dr. Paxton and the staff at the Valley Vet Clinic donated their time to help the pup. SCRAPS is also helping with costs.
