If there's something strange in your neighborhood, you call Ghostbusters. If there is a cache of really old dynamite in a shed near some homes, you call the Spokane County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad.

On Tuesday the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office responded to a home just outside of Osburn after a man reported finding old dynamite in a shed at his elderly father's house. Due to the proximity of nearby homes, the unknown age and amount of the dynamite, deputies called the Spokane County Sheriff's Bomb Squad for help.

Once on scene, explosives technicians took x-rays of the shed, which revealed several boxes of dynamite. Knowing that dynamite becomes more and more unstable as it ages, and can be detonated merely by something falling onto it or it being dropped, it was determined the best option was to burn it.

Firefighters, the bomb squad and Shoshone County deputies developed of a plan and closed the road while the bomb squad ignited the shed. The shed burned for about an hour and only after it had collapsed and was smoldering did firefighters determined the dynamite was safely destroyed.

The Shoshone County Sheriff's Office says this is a good reminder for citizens not to handle dynamite should you find any. Instead, call 911.
