Commission starts new search for Spokane Police Ombudsman

SPOKANE, Wash. -

Spokane's Office of Police Ombudsman Commission announced Friday that it will start fresh in the search for a new Ombudsman after the selection committee's first choice, Raheel Humayun, was denied a visa to work in the United States last month.

Humayun, a British Columbia resident, was selected in November last year. The police ombudsman's office has been open for business thanks to a temporary ombudsman, Bart Logue.

In a press release Friday, the commission's chair, Debra Conklin, expressed frustration over how long the search has taken.

"The OPOC was concerned from the beginning that the only viable candidate for our Ombudsman, among the candidates forwarded to the Commission by the first Selection Committee, was someone who would require us to go through this time consuming Visa process," She said. "But our only other option was to declare that the Selection Committee had not forwarded any qualified candidates and direct them to start over. Because it had taken that committee nine months to surface the first set of three candidates, we believed that we could have a strong Ombudsman in place sooner by offering the position to Mr. Humayun. Unfortunately, that has not proved to be the case."
