West Valley School District warns parents of suspicious men luring young students

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

West Valley School District is warning parents to review with their children the proper steps to take during a child luring attempt after a scary situation was reported by two students after school on Tuesday, May 3rd.

In a letter sent home to parents in the school district, a female student from Centennial Middle School reported that while waiting with her younger sibling near Pasadena Park Elementary School on Bessie Rd., two men pulled up and tried to encourage them to come to their vehicle.

The girl reported what happened to a staff member who then made sure the girls got to their destination safely.

The vehicle is described as a white, 4-door sedan, similar to a Civic or Camry and reportedly passed by the school several times over a period of 10 minutes. No other students reported similar incidents.

The incident is being investigated and has been reported to the school resource officer.

The School District asks that all parents review the following safety instructions with their children:

  • Use the “buddy system” and walk in pairs whenever possible
  • Do not talk to strangers
  • Do not get in a car with a stranger
  • Report any suspicious incident to school officials

Here's the letter that was sent home on to parents:

"From West Valley School District:
May 4, 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Our number one priority is the safety of our students. Therefore, we are sharing information about an incident that occurred late yesterday near Pasadena Park Elementary School. Two men in a vehicle tried to encourage a female student from Centennial Middle School, who was with her younger sibling, to come to their vehicle while the students were waiting near the school on Bessie Road. The children reported the incident to a staff member who ensured they were able to get to their destination safely. The vehicle passed by the school multiple times over a period of 10 minutes. No further incidents occurred. This has been reported to our School Resource Deputy and is being investigated.

The men are described as being in their 20’s with dark colored hair. The vehicle is a midsize white 4-door similar to a Civic or Camry.

In light of this luring attempt, please review safety instructions with your child reminding them:

Use the “buddy system” and walk in pairs whenever possible
Do not talk to strangers
Do not get in a car with a stranger
Report any suspicious incident to school officials

Thank you for your assistance in our efforts to insure the safety of our students."
