SPOKANE, Wash. -

"He's very well known to us downtown," Spokane Police told KHQ Friday morning while arresting a suspected car prowler they are probably on a first name basis with at this point after arresting him numerous times throughout the years.

You've heard this story before. Thieves gonna thieve, right? 40-year-old Thomas Myers has been doing it for years. According to a criminal history search, Myers has 16 previous felony convictions dating back to 1994, most involving something that was stolen. On Friday morning, Spokane Police say Myers was at it again, but this time he picked the wrong car to try and break into.

Kayla Sperle was working at Molly's Restaurant at 3rd and Lincoln when the restaurant received a phone call from a passing motorist letting them know there was a man breaking into a red Ford Mustang behind the restaurant. Kayla, her manager and another employee didn't hesitate. With Kayla leading the charge, she bolted out of the back door and ran straight to man who was breaking into her car. As the man runs away from a determined Kayla, she grabbed her backpack he stole and pulled it off, slowing him down just enough for Kayla's manager and another employee to tackle the thief and detain him until police arrived.

Spokane Police showed up and immediately knew who they were dealing with: 16-time convicted felon Thomas C. Myers. Officers on scene said Myers told them he saw an iPod in the car and decided to break in.

Surveillance video from Molly's shows Myers and another person on a bike, who appears to be a lookout, scouting out the red Mustang before taking a knife and cutting into the soft-top canvas to gain access into the car. But as the thief is rustling through the car, out comes an upset Kayla to stop him in his tracks.

Myers was booked into the Spokane County Jail a short time later for 2nd Degree Malicious Mischief. It doesn't appear that the person on the bike was caught.

What's the first thing you would do if you had a pet translator and you could understand your dog or cat? I'd probably immediately let my cat know how sorry I am for stepping on her tail all those times. Recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning suggest the dream of communicating with your pets could become a reality.
