Officers involved in machete shooting near Zola identified

SPOKANE, Wash. -

The Spokane Police Department is releasing the names of the officers involved in the May 1 officer involved shooting of a man armed with a machete near Zola on W. Main. Officers Brandon Fabian, Nathanael Gobble and Jeremy Howe utilized blunt impact munitions during the incident, while Officer Scott Lesser fired his gun, striking Charleston Harper, who has been charged with first degree burglary.

The involved officers have a combined 15 years of experience with SPD. Officer Fabian served as a Marine ofr four years before becoming a Spokane officers. He was hired in 2013 and is currently a member fo the TAC Team.

Officer Nate Gobble was a reserve officer before he was hired full time in February 2012. Officer Gobble is currently a member of the TAC Team, Chemical Agent Response Team and a Field Training Officer.

Officer Jeremy Howe was hired by SPD in June of 2014. He is currently on the TAC Team and a Field Training Officer. Before joining SPD he spent five years in the Army, where he was a member of the military SWAT team for over two years and was a sniper for a year. He worked for King County Sheriff's Office for three years and the Spokane County Sheriff's Office for 9 year as a deputy for both agencies.

Before he was hired as an SPD officer, Officer Scott Lesser was a volunteer in SPD's Cooperative Education Program for about a year and a half. He was also a a Reserve Officer for SPD. He was hired full time in January 2010. He has been a member of the TAC Team, a Field Training Officer, and has completed both Basic and Advanced Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. He has also been an adviser for the Co-op and Reserve programs. He is currently a member of the SWAT Team and assigned to the Patrol Anti-Crime Team (PACT).

On SR-395 in Clayton near Mile Post 185, a vehicle crossed the center line and crashed head on with another car, killing the driver. The causing driver who was transported to the hospital is in custody for vehicular homicide. There were no other occupants of either vehicle.

    ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - Officials say a 70-year-old southern New Mexico man who regularly fed wildlife at his home suffered multiple injuries when he was bitten by a bear as he stepped outside. The state Game and Fish Department says conservation officers went to the man's Cloudcroft home Friday after his wife drove him to an Alamogordo hospital for treatment of injuries that included arm puncture wounds and leg scratches.
