SPOKANE, Wash. -

There's a new twist in the clash between a downtown Spokane Catholic church, and a nearby pot shop.

On Thursday, the church met with a state senator and city council members. There was no resolution at the meeting but a discovery afterwards has some taking a second look.

Father Connall from the Cathedral of Our Lady Lourdes wants churches included in a state law that would stop marijuana dispensaries from operating nearby, "It's not a religious issue. It's just a basic human dignity issue."

On Thursday, he made his plea to Senator Baumgartner and some city council members. "We have between 400 and 500 churches in the city so is that going to be practical?" said City Council Member Lori Kinnear.

Right now the law says a pot shop can't be within 1,000 feet of an elementary school, child care center and what Father Connall says he realized after Thursday's meeting, a public park.

KHQ found out there is a public park located next to the Cathedral, according to the city's website (https://my.spokanecity.org/parks/finder/). It's listed as "Riverside-Cedar Parkway." From Lucky Leaf to the park, it's about 884 feet away.

KHQ talked with the Liquor Control Board twice. We let them know what Father Connall found and we learned that Liquor Control Board will be looking into it.

"At the end of the day, we're not letting this go, we feel very strong about this," said Father Connall.

Father Connall said he'll meet with city council in June.
