SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

A man walking in Spokane Valley early Monday morning says he was punched and shot in the leg because the suspects thought he was in a gang.

The 47-year-old man told Spokane Valley Sheriff's Deputies that he was walking north on Dick Road Monday morning when a man dressed in all red approached him. The suspect asked him if he was affiliated with a gang. The victim said he was not in a gang, but thinks he was targeted because he was wearing all blue clothing.

The victim was hit a couple of times, knocking off his Seattle Mariners hat. The victim then walked away, but the suspect urged him to come back for his hat. The man continued to walk away and heard the suspect whistle, which made him think he was summoning more people to assault him.

As the man kept walking, a car pulled up beside him and he says he heard gunshots, one of which hit him in the leg. As he fell to the ground, the car took off.

Deputies contacted possible suspects at a nearby house, but the victim could not positively identify anyone as being involved.

The victim was treated and released for his gunshot wound.

The incident is being investigated by the Spokane Regional Safe Streets Task Force.  The Spokane Regional Safe Streets Task Force is comprised of investigators from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, Spokane Valley Police Department, Spokane Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Washington State Department of Corrections and the FBI. The SRSSTF is a FBI sponsored task force working to alleviate the criminal activities of gangs, violent criminals and upper level drug traffickers.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
