SPOKANE, Wash. -

Over the weekend, to celebrate Coeur d'Alene Park's 125th birthday, artists took to the intersections around the park to pain giant murals on the streets. One artist was Ellen Picken, who put together a mural with the help of volunteers on Saturday. She also filmed the mural's creation with the help of her local creative company called Factory Town.

The two-minute time lapse video, featuring music by local two-man band The Smokes, showed just what it took to make a mural of such size.

The mural was completed around 3 p.m. Saturday, right before storms rolled in to Spokane and heavy rain fell. But Rajah Bose with Factory Town told KHQ that the mural survived the downpour.

"The rain beat it down a bit, but it's still there," Bose said Monday.

The Friends of Coeur d'Alene Park says that throughout the day Saturday and then during ArtFest in June, people can vote on the art they like best by placing money in boxes manned by volunteers at each intersection. The donations will be used toward improvements to the park as outlined in the recently approved Master Plan. The artist whose intersection art accrues the most “dollar votes” will receive a ‘People’s Choice’ cash award at the end of ArtFest.

Coeur d'Alene Park holds the distinction of being the first public park in Spokane, created in 1891. In October of last year a new Master Plan was adopted by the Spokane Parks Board, which the Friend of the park say will restore it "to its former glory."
