Lewis and Clark High School senior chosen as Dem Party delegate

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

The Democrats have chosen delegates through the caucus system and one of the delegates for Bernie Sanders is Lewis and Clark High School senior, Ava Sharifi.

You may remember the 18 year old from her "We Are All Human" speech she gave at Lewis and Clark back in February.  Since then she's continued to do big things.  Sharifi was selected as a national delegate for Bernie Sanders after a lot of campaigning.

"I would just swoop my hand in there and quickly say my name about four or five times so they would recognize it," says Sharifi about how she worked hard trying to make a name for herself.  "This is, in my opinion, the greatest start to my political career especially since I am at such a young age."

Sharifi worked her way up starting as a precinct delegate.  At last weekend's caucus, she had just one minute to gain the voters' confidence.

"It's hard to convince somebody else, 'Hey, I know that you're running for the same position as me, but vote for me,'" says Sharifi.  "I talked about how I've been working on my political career since I was 10 years old, starting with Occupy Spokane and all these different revolutions, civil rights, and human rights.  These are things that I just thrive on.  It's my passion."

Her passion paid off.  Sharifi will head to the National Democratic convention in Philadelphia in July.  She'll be supporting a candidate she says represents the working class which for her is very important.

"My point of view, which is also part of Bernie Sanders campaign is so many people from the opposing side say that he's just too idealistic.  They say that none of his ideas are going to work, that it's all of his hopes and all of his dreams.   My exact belief is that if we constantly stick to realism we'll never push the limits," says Sharifi.

"Everyone has their dreams and this is mine."
